Fe’nix

2025

“A little bird I am,
Shut from the fields of air,
And in my cage I sit and sing
To Him who placed me there:
Well pleased a prisoner to be,
Because, my God, it pleases Thee!

“Naught have I else to do;
I sing the whole day long;
And He whom most I love to please
Doth listen to my song,
He caught and bound my wandering wing,
But still He bends to hear me sing.”

By Louisa May Alcott

And this poem author unknown

He placed me in a little cage,
Away from gardens fair;
But I must sing the sweetest songs
Because He placed me there.
Not beat my wings against the cage
If it’s my Maker’s will,
But raise my voice to heaven’s gate
And sing the louder still!

Lessons from a caged bird.
My little Spanish Timbrado.

In January (2025) i recieved my self purchased Christmas presant. I had ordered a canary from a South California Bird shop. It took awhile for my bird to arrive because of the bad fire situation in the area.

When he did arrive i named him Fe’nix. The Spanish spelling of the bird out of the flames.
He was young and i thought for a time he wouldn’t but, to my delight he soon started singing. He had a beautiful varied song. Trills, tweets, and melodies.

I have read that canaries learn their songs from other canaries. He had probably learned this song from his cage mates.

He sang for me for several monthes. He especially sang when he heard running water. Which proved to be an added blessing for me when i did the dishes. (i use to detest dish washing. It is still not my favor but his singing really helps)

In the late fall, early winter he stopped singing. I was not worried. I had been expecting it. He went into the usual molt. So, he didn’t sing for a few months.
About mid winter i started hearing some small clicking noises. A few days of this. Then some chirps. Like he was trying out his new song. He then started whistling 3 notes, like he was calling the dog. I thought oh no. His Song will be altered.

After a month or so his song grew and contained a varity of clicks, trills, tweets, melodies, and the dog calling.
So, he has set his song for this year.

I will be able to enjoy it whenever i hear him sing. Oh that i could learn from his example. And set a good song for my year.
